Where Zone 0 work ends, hardening begins
The Getty Fire and the January 2025 Mandeville Canyon flare-up were both ember-driven. IBHS ember science is blunt about the sequence: embers ignite material near the house, then enter through openings. Work the list in this order.
1. Ember-resistant vents
Swap attic, crawl-space, and gable vents for 1/8-inch metal mesh or listed ember-resistant models. The cheapest high-impact job on this page.
2. Gutters & roof edge

Enclose open eaves, screen under-deck areas, upgrade to dual-pane glass. Bigger tickets, best bundled into remodels.
Canyon homes get found by embers, not flame fronts
In October 2019, the Getty Fire's embers crossed ridgelines into Brentwood streets the flames never reached. Ten homes were destroyed. Homes that survive ember storms are the ones with no way in.

What single upgrade matters most?
Ember-resistant vents. Attic and crawl-space vents are the front door embers use to get inside a house, and vent retrofits are among the cheapest hardening work available. IBHS research puts vents and the first five feet at the top of the priority list.
Is home hardening legally required like Zone 0?
Mostly no, for existing homes. Zone 0 is the regulatory requirement; vents, gutters, and eave work are best practice for existing Brentwood homes. New construction and fire rebuilds in Very High FHSZ areas must meet California's Chapter 7A building standards.
Why do hardening and Zone 0 work belong in one project?
Because the failure mode is one sequence: an ember lands within five feet, ignites fuel, and the fire enters through a vent, eave, or window. Clearing the zone removes the fuel bed; hardening closes the entry points. Doing both in one mobilization costs less than two separate jobs.
